CHESAPEAKE, Ohio -
A Huntington High School student is taking on a project beyond her years and is hoping to share her love for horses with the next generation.
Amber Brinegar is planning a camp aimed at teaching children about proper horse care and riding. She named it the Horsin' Around Day Camp.
Brinegar's love for horses started when she was a little girl.
"I want to do it because horses have really been a big part of my life," Brinegar said.
Between classes and homework she is putting the finishing touches on an idea that she said first came to her over a year ago.
"We are going to teach kids how to ride. We are going to go over stable management and how to take care of the horses and how to tack them up," Brinegar said. "We are going to do a little fun show so that we can introduce them to doing shows and get them just a little taste of what they'll be doing during show season."
The camp is being held at Freedom Farms in Chesapeake, Ohio. Trainers at the stable will be helping to teach riders.
"I hope they'll really get more interested into horseback riding like I was," Brinegar said. "I love to be around them. It helps to relieve stress after school work and it is just enjoyable."
Camp will start at 10 a.m. and will continue through 5 p.m. Children will be asked to bring their own lunch. The cost of camp is $60 per camper. Proceeds from the camp will benefit two programs that Brinegar supports. One of the programs is the newly established therapeutic riding center at Freedom Farms. The other is Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue.
"It is giving back to something that has been part of my life for many years," Brinegar said.
The camp is open to kids 8 to 17 years of age. There are only 15 spots available. To reserve a spot you can email Brinegar at horsinarounddaycamp13@gmail.com.
