Abattoir intervenes to help save donkey duo

The intervention of an abattoir has helped save two young and healthy donkeys from slaughter.
Jack, 10, and Sam, 5, who are both described as fit and healthy, are now safe in the care of The Donkey Sanctuary in Britain.
The Devon-based charity said it was contacted by an abattoir that was reluctant to destroy such young and healthy animals.
The sanctuary said it was the first time a slaughterhouse had ever sought its help, and it was glad to be asked to intervene.
Following the tip-off from the abattoir, the donkeys’ owners agreed to relinquish their animals to the charity’s care, where they now have a home for life.
The donkeys were unwanted since their owners wanted to use their land, in Wales, for other things.
Donkey welfare adviser Tamlin Watson said she was thankful the abattoir called the charity for help.
“We took a call from an abattoir concerned that they had been asked to dispose of two such young healthy animals.
Thankfully, we managed to talk their owners into signing them over to us and they are now safe in our care.
“It’s sad the owners didn’t want them and just wanted to get rid of them, but we’re very grateful to the abattoir for contacting us rather than destroying such fit and healthy animals with so much life ahead of them and so much love to give.
“They’re very sweet and gentle and could make great family pets in the future through our foster scheme.”
Jack and Sam were uplifted in Wales and taken to the charity’s headquarters in Sidmouth, Devon. They may be considered for fostering to a private home in future.
